[ABOVE] A carte-de-visite portrait of Mrs Harriet Bex and her baby daughter Kathleen Lillian Bex (born 1894, Godalming, Surrey) taken at John White's studio at Gresham House, Beach Road, Littlehampton (c1896) [Negative No. G 8450]

Mrs Harriet Bex was born Harriet Beagley at Farncombe, Surrey in 1862, the daughter of Elizabeth and George Beagley, a railway platelayer from Bramshott, Surrey. At the time of the 1881 census, nineteen year old Harriet Beagley was living with her parents and 8 siblings in Church Street, Godalming. Harriet Beagley was working in a paper factory in 1881. The following year Harriet married Richard Bex (born 1860, Godalming, Surrey), a journeyman butcher from Godalming. Harriet's first child, Richard Bex junior, was born in Godalming in 1883. It was another eleven years before Harriet gave birth to her second child Kathleen Lillian Bex, who arrived during the 4th Quarter of 1894.

In 1919, Kathleen Lillian Bex married Henry  Merritt.

[ABOVE] A carte-de-visite portrait of Louisa Pagan (1858-1908). Louisa Pagan was born in Geneva, Switzerland, but came to England as a young woman to work as a governess and teacher. In 1881, she was one of two teacher-governesses employed at Okeover Hall, Staffordshire by Haughton Charles Okeover (1825-1912), a wealthy landowner. In 1881, there were seven daughters and one son residing  at Okeover Hall. Louisa was 26 years of age when she was photographed by John White in 1884. Louisa, who never married, worked as a Governess in England until she died in 1908 aged 50.

[ABOVE] A carte-de-visite portrait of  Mabel Pocock, who was born in Egham, Surrey in 1882. She was the eldest daughter of  Percy Willmer Pocock (born 1856, Pimlico, London), a solicitor and Jessie Mabel Gurney (born c1861 Brixton Hill). The original owner of the photograph has inscribed on the back of the carte,"A school friend, Mabel Pocock - Father at the College, Englefield Green". Percy Pocock, worked as a solicitor for the Royal Holloway College, at Englefield Green. This photograph was taken around 1902, when Mabel was about 20 years of age.

The people in the photograph have not been identified, but are believed to be members of the Hawes family, who originated from Norfolk. On the back of the photograph is the written inscription "photo taken Easter Monday, 1901".

The Duke of Norfolk played a leading part in Littlehampton affairs. [ABOVE]  A picture postcard studio portrait of a boy in a Robin Hood  fancy dress costume by John White & Son, Photographers, Littlehampton. The reverse of the postcard is inscribed "Reggie, Age 11 - Photo taken Jan. 1913".
