Inscribed on the reverse of the carte is the name "John Hodgkin". The subject of the portrait, John Hodgkin (1800-1875), was a barrister and Quaker philanthropist.

[ABOVE] Carte-de-visite portrait of a young woman, inscribed "Mary Bowden", photographed at the studio of Edward Reeves at 159 High Street, Lewes (c1870). Negative No. 6,755. Mary Bowden was born in Dublin around 1853. At Lewes on 5th September 1875, twenty-two year old Mary Bowden married James Coleman Howard. After her husband James Coleman Howard died in 1890 at the age of 40, Mrs Mary Howard supported her family by dressmaking. Mrs Mary Howard died in Brighton in 1922 at the age of 69. [ABOVE] The trade plate of Edward Reeves, photographer of  159 High Street, Lewes as shown on the reverse of a carte-de-visite portrait produced around 1870. This trade plate followed the basic design of the trade plate used by Edward Reeves during the early 1860s (see the example on the top row) but with the added script about ordering further copies by quoting the negative number. The word "PHOTOGRAPHER" is printed in block capitals rather than in the Old English type used on Reeves' early cartes. [ABOVE] Carte-de-visite portrait of a woman in a satin dress, inscribed "Mrs Luckraft", photographed at the studio of Edward Reeves at 159 High Street, Lewes (c1870). Negative No. 6,937. Mrs Louisa Jane Luckraft (1824-1898) was the wife of Captain Charles Maxwell  Luckraft, the Governor of the Naval Prison in North Street, Lewes. Mrs Luckraft and her husband retired to Gosport in Hampshire. Mrs Luckraft died in Gosport in 1898. Captain Luckraft  died in Gosport in 1908, aged 94. [ABOVE] Carte-de-visite portrait of a man and his wife, photographed at the studio of Edward Reeves at 159 High Street, Lewes (c1871). Negative No. 7544. This carte-de-visite is mounted on a card that is printed with a newly introduced trade plate similar to that illustrated below. The signature "Edwd. Reeves" is printed diagonally in the centre of the trade plate. As with Reeves' earlier trade plates, the new design carries a coat of arms featuring a shield with a chequered pattern and a rampant lion.

[ABOVE] Carte-de-visite portrait of a teenage girl, photographed at the studio of Edward Reeves at 159 High Street, Lewes (c1872). Negative No. 10,538. The subject of the portrait is identified as "Mrs Walker nee Ellman". Maude Ellman (born 1856, Berwick, Sussex) was the daughter of Rev. Edward Boys Ellman (1815-1906), the Rector of Berwick. On 20th May 1890, Maude Ellman married John Walker at Berwick. When her father's book "Recollections of a Sussex Parson" was published in 1912, Mrs Maude Walker, Rev. Edward Boys Ellman's daughter, provided a memoir of her father. [ABOVE] Carte-de-visite portrait of a woman and her young child, photographed at the studio of Edward Reeves at 159 High Street, Lewes (c1872). Negative No. 11,978. Inscribed on the reverse of the carte are the words "Granny with Dick Lambe". Richard Frederick Lambe was born in East Blatchington in 1875. The child in the photograph  is more likely to be Richard's elder sister Mary Elizabeth Lambe who was born in 1872. The woman in the photograph would be Mrs Elizabeth Sarah Lambe [formerly Shoosmith,] (born 1844, Arlington, Sussex), the wife of Robert Lambe, a farmer of East Blatchington. [ABOVE] A vignette or 'crayon' portrait of a bearded man in an oval frame, a carte-de-visite produced at the studio of Edward Reeves, 159 High Street, Lewes (1872). The portrait has been mechanically punched to form a convex oval within a brownish frame. Negative No. 10,057. A date of  '1872' is Inscribed in pencil on the reverse of this carte-de-visite. The trade plate printed on the reverse of this carte-de-visite portrait is illustrated on the right. [ABOVE] The trade plate of Edward Reeves, photographer of  159 High Street, Lewes as shown on the reverse of a carte-de-visite portrait produced in 1872. Negative No. 10,057. This new trade plate design was introduced around 1870.  The photographer's signature "Edwd. Reeves" is printed diagonally in the centre of the trade plate. Inscribed on the reverse of the carte is the name and address of the sitter "Mr Walter Cheale, Little Buckham Hill, Uckfield, Sussex". Walter Cheale was born in Maresfield, Sussex, in 1843 and was a "Farmer & Carpenter" based at Little Buckham Hill, Isfield, near Uckfield.
