Carte-de-visite Portraits by Merrick & Co of Brighton

MERRICK was the trading name of Joseph Langridge junior (1812-1895) who operated a photographic studio in Brighton between 1856 and 1873

Carte-de-visite Portraits of Members of the Trenchard-Rowden Family by Merrick & Co of Brighton

[ABOVE] A carte-de-visite portrait of Reverend Edward Rowden of Highworth (1780-1869), photographed by "Merrick" at Joseph Langridge's photographic studio, 33 Western Road, Brighton (1862). Inscribed in ink on the reverse "Revd Edward Rowden, 81 years of age - Dec 2nd 1862." Rev. Edward Rowden was Vicar of St Michael's and All Angels Church, in Highworth, Wiltshire for 65 years. The headstone to Reverend Rowden's grave in St Michael's churchyard reads "Rev Edward Rowden M.A. For 65 years vicar of this parish. Died March 27 1869 aged 88 years. [ABOVE] A portrait of an unidentified woman, photographed by "Merrick" at Joseph Langridge's photographic studio, 33 Western Road, Brighton (c1863). This portrait appears to have been taken at the same session as the portrait of Mrs Elizabeth Ann Wheatley Masters pictured on the far left of the bottom row of this panel. The studio setting with the draped curtain, the painted window backdrop, and the ornamental table with the statuette of the stag is almost identical to that featured in the carte-de-visite portrait of Mrs Elizabeth Masters shown bottom-left. The sitter is identified on the reverse of the carte as "Ellen" - possibly Ellen Ashfordby Trenchard (1846-1899), a daughter of  Rev John Ashfordby Trenchard  and Mary Elizabeth Jane Davies. In 1870, Miss  Ellen Ashfordby Trenchard  married William Caldwell Masters (born 1842, Greenwich), a son of John S. Masters and Elizabeth Kenning,

Inscribed in ink on the reverse "Miss Rowden, 1862" and in pencil "Oct 16th 1862". A modern hand has added "Mrs R. E. Davies". Ellen Trenchard was the daughter of  Rev. Edward Rowden (1780-1869) and his second wife Ellen Ashfordby Trenchard (1796-1834). Ellen Trenchard Rowden married Richard Edward Elkings Davies on 5th April 1864. Inscribed in ink on the reverse "My Sister-in-Law Mrs Masters, 1863".  Elizabeth Ann Wheatley Kenning was born in Greenwich, Kent on 2nd January 1820. Miss Elizabeth Ann Wheatley Kenning married John Smalman Masters (1800-1897) in 1840. In 1870, William Caldwell Masters (born 1842, Greenwich), a son of John S. Masters and Elizabeth Kenning, married Ellen Ashfordby Trenchard (1846-1899), a daughter of  Rev John Ashfordby Trenchard  and Mary Elizabeth Jane Davies. [ see portrait on the right ]. [ABOVE] A carte-de-visite portrait of Mrs Mary Elizabeth Jane Trenchard (1807-1863), photographed by "Merrick" at Joseph Langridge's photographic studio, 33 Western Road, Brighton (c1862). Inscribed in ink on the reverse "Mrs Trenchard of Fairlawn". Mary Elizabeth Jane Davies, daughter of  Mrs Elizabeth and Rev Samuel Davies of Northaw, was born in Shalford, Surrey, on 16th January 1807. Mary Elizabeth Ann Davies married  Rev John Trenchard Craven Ashfordby Trenchard (1800-1851) on 27th August 1839. When this photograph was taken, Mrs Elizabeth Trenchard was a fifty-five year old widow. Mrs Elizabeth Trenchard died the following year at Northaw, Hertfordshire, at the age of fifty-six. [ABOVE] A carte-de-visite portrait of Frances Trenchard (1844-1912), photographed by "Merrick" at Joseph Langridge's photographic studio, 33 Western Road, Brighton (c1864). Inscribed in ink on the reverse "Fanny, Mr Davies's third niece" and in pencil "Fanny Trenchard". Miss Frances Trenchard was the third child of  Rev John Trenchard Craven Ashfordby Trenchard (1800-1851) and his wife Elizabeth (1807-1863) [ see portrait on the left ]. Frances Ashfordby Trenchard of Northaw, Hertfordshire married John Ford Seviar of Stanton Fitzwarren in 1866. Mrs Frances Sevier (formerly Fanny Trenchard) died at Bath in 1912, aged 67.
