In the late 1860s, the trade plate on the back of photographs produced at Whiteman's Library was stamped in black ink on the plain card mount. From 1869 until about 1874, Whiteman used purple ink, rather than black ink, to print the business name & address on the back of his cartes. Whiteman's trade plate design from this period featured a coat of arms and a ribbon banner inside a curved frame. Around 1874, Whiteman switched to using brown ink on cream card and employed a more elaborate design. From around 1874, Whiteman placed his trade plate within the framework of a "roses & trellis" design. From around 1880, the same design was still used by the Whiteman studio, but the card mounts were slightly thicker, were light orange in colour and had rounded corners.
