Jesse Holloway and Holloway & Beard of Brighton

In 1871 and 1872, Jesse Holloway (1840-1896), a photographer based in Brighton, conducted a photographic tour of the southern counties of England. Jesse Holloway embarked on his first "Provincial Tour" in 1871. The following year, in partnership with his widowed elder sister Mrs Jane Beard (1837-1914), Jesse Holloway set off on his second "Provincial Tour". During this time, Jesse Holloway and the firm of Holloway & Beard had its headquarters in Brighton, first at No. 1 Hampden Road, Brighton and later at No. 42 Belgrave Street, Brighton. Previously, in April 1871, when the census was taken, Jesse Holloway and his sister Mrs Jane Beard were residing together at 23 Crown Street, Brighton.

Jesse Holloway and his Family

Jesse Holloway was born around 1840 at Basingstoke, Hampshire, the son of Frances and Charles Holloway. Jesse's father appears to have been Charles Holloway (born 1813, Romsey, Hampshire) who married Frances Biggs at Amport, Hampshire, on 12th December 1835. [ Hampshire trade directories record Charles Holloway as a "boot and shoe maker" of Romsey ].

Three of Charles Holloway's children became professional photographers:

1. Jane Holloway (born 1837, Grately, Hampshire) married William Beard in 1862, but her husband died six years later in 1868. Mrs Jane Beard worked as a photographer alongside her brother, Jesse Holloway, in the firm of Holloway & Beard. The firm of Holloway & Beard was based first in Brighton and later in Reigate, Surrey. In 1872, the brother and sister partnership of Holloway & Beard embarked on a "Provincial Tour" from their base in Brighton. Later, during the late 1870s and early 1880s, Mrs Jane Beard worked from her own studio in Holmesdale Road, Reigate. Mrs Beard later moved to Cheltenham in Gloucestershire where her brother Jesse was working as a photographer. Mrs Jane Beard died in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in 1914, aged 77.

2. Jesse Holloway (born c1840, Basingstoke, Hampshire) married Sarah Jane Marriner (born 1838, Portsea, Hampshire) in 1860. This union produced 3 children - Edith Fanny Bertha Holloway (born 1865, Hordle, Hampshire), Annie Jane Holloway (born 1868, Beaulieu, Hampshire) and Elizabeth Emily Holloway (born 1870, Ditchling, near Brighton, Sussex). Mrs Sarah Jane Holloway, Jesse's first wife died in Brighton early in 1871, aged 32. In 1874, Jesse Holloway married Caroline Payne (born c1843, Dunmow, Essex). This union produced at least three more children - Harry Holloway (born 1876, Fulham), Kate Holloway (born 1878, Penge, Surrey) and Wilfrid Payne Holloway* (born 1881, Penge, Surrey). At various times during his photographic career, Jesse Holloway operated as a photographer in Brighton, Reigate, West Croydon, Annerley in South-East London and Cheltenham in Gloucestershire. Jesse Holloway died in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in 1896, aged 56. His widow Mrs Caroline Holloway, took over the running of her late husband's studio, assisted by Jesse's sons and daughters.

3. Edgar Holloway (born 1842, Amport, Hampshire) married Maria Anne Sirman (born 1842, South Moreton, Berkshire) in 1865. Edgar Holloway operated as a professional photographer in Surrey, at Sutton and Croydon, before working as a photographer and postman in Tooting, South London. Edgar Holloway died in Tooting in 1925.

Jesse Holloway (1840-1896)

Jesse Holloway was born around 1840 at Basingstoke, Hampshire, the son of Frances and Charles Holloway. Although he was born in Basingstoke around the year 1840, Jesse Holloway was not baptised until 30th November 1848, after his parents had settled in the town of Romsey.

On 21st October,1860, twenty year old Jesse Holloway married Sarah Jane Marriner (born 1838, Portsea, Hampshire) at Southampton. At the time of the 1861 census, Jesse Holloway was residing at South Stoneham in Hampshire. Jesse Holloway appears to have adopted an itinerant lifestyle which is reflected in the various birthplaces of his children. Jesse and Sarah Jane Holloway's first child, Edith Fanny Bertha Holloway was born at the village of Hordle, near Lymington, during the 3rd Quarter of 1865. By the time their second daughter, Annie Jane Holloway, was born in 1868, Jesse Holloway and his wife were staying at Beaulieu in the New Forest area of Hampshire. The couple's third daughter, Elizabeth Emily Holloway was born at the Sussex village of Ditchling, near Brighton.

Jesse Holloway and his family arrived in Brighton early in 1871. Soon after their arrival in Brighton, Jesse's thirty-two year old wife, Sarah Jane Holloway, died. [The death of Mrs Sarah Jane Holloway was registered in Brighton during the 1st Quarter of 1871].

When the census was taken on 2nd April 1871, the photographer Jesse Holloway was residing at 23 Crown Street, Brighton, with his three daughters and his widowed sister, Mrs Jane Beard (born 1837, Grately, Hampshire) :

When the census was taken on 2nd April 1871, the photographer Jesse Holloway was residing with Elizabeth Tuppen, a 39 year old dressmaker, at 23 Crown Street, Brighton. On the census return, Jesse Holloway is described as a 30 year old widower working as a "Photographer". (Jesse Holloway's wife, Mrs Sarah Jane Holloway, had died in Brighton early in 1871 at the age of 32). Sharing Jesse Holloway's accommodation in Brighton was his widowed sister Mrs Jane Beard, a 33 year old dressmaker, and Jesse's three daughters from his first marriage - Edith Fanny Bertha (aged 5), Annie Jane (aged 3) and Elizabeth Emily Holloway (aged 3 months). Jesse's youngest child had been born in Ditchling, a village 6 miles north of Brighton.

In the Spring of 1871, Jesse Holloway, then based at No. 1 Hampden Road, Brighton, embarked on a "Provincial Tour", touring the southern counties of England with his camera, taking photographic portraits in a portable studio or on location.

The formation of the photographic firm of Holloway & Beard

After the death of his first wife, Mrs Sarah Jane Holloway, early in 1871, Jesse Holloway shared his home in Brighton with his widowed sister, Mrs Jane Beard. The young widow entered into a business partnership with her brother to form the photography firm of Holloway & Beard. The following year (1872), from their new base at No. 42 Belgrave Street, Brighton, Holloway & Beard set off on a second "Provincial Tour", eventually arriving in Reigate, Surrey, around 1873.

Jesse Holloway and Mrs Jane Beard in Reigate, Surrey

When their second "Provincial Tour" of 1872 came to an end, Jesse Holloway and his sister Mrs Jane Beard arrived in Reigate, Surrey. By 1873, the brother-sister partnership of Holloway & Beard had taken over Edgar Drewett's branch studio which was situated opposite Reigate Railway Station. [ Edgar Drewett (born 1823, Rochester, Kent) the former owner of the Reigate studio, had become a photographer in the late 1850s and although based at 47 High Street, Guildford, had established branch studios at Dorking, Aldershot, Blackheath, Basingstoke and Winchester, as well as the studio located opposite the Railway Station in Reigate, Surrey).

The partnership between Jesse Holloway and his sister Mrs Jane Beard lasted for just a few more years. Around 1875, Jesse Holloway left Reigate to take over his brother Edgar's studio in Croydon, Surrey. In 1874, Jesse Holloway had married a local woman named Caroline Payne (born c1849, Dunmow, Essex) and no longer required the services of his older sister.

Mrs Jane Beard remained in Reigate and, after the departure of her brother Jesse, she continued to take photographic portraits at the studio opposite the town's railway station. The carte-de-visite portraits produced by Mrs Beard in the late 1870s carry the credit "From the Photographic Studio of J. Beard, Reigate, Surrey" and give no indication of her gender, marital status or the exact business address. However, local trade directories list Mrs Jane Beard as a professional photographer based in Holmesdale Road, the street that faced Reigate Railway Station. The 1881 census, also records Mrs Jane Beard as a "Photographer" residing in Holmesdale Road, Reigate Foreign, Surrey. Photographic portraits taken by Mrs Jane Beard during the early 1880s carry a business address of 3 Holmesdale Road, Reigate, Surrey. Jesse Holloway's sister operated as a photographer in Reigate throughout  the 1880s

Jesse Holloway's Photographic Career after 1875

After his marriage to Caroline Payne (born c1843, Dunmow, Essex), Jesse Holloway left Reigate to take over the running of a photographic studio in West Croydon. The studio at No. 4 London Road, West Croydon, was situated opposite West Croydon Railway Station and had previously been owned by George Albert Nichols (born 1840, Cambridge) - sometimes recorded as G. A. Nicholls. For a brief period, the studio at 4 London Road, West Croydon, had been operated by Edgar Holloway (born 1842, Amport, Hampshire), Jesse Holloway's younger brother.

Within a couple of years, Jesse Holloway had acquired a second photographic studio in the South London district of Anerley (now part of the London Borough of Bromley). Jesse Holloway's new studio was at No. 1 Versailles Terrace, Anerley Road, London S.E. In 1877, Jesse Holloway was operating two studios in tandem, one at 4 London Road, West Croydon, the other at Anerley in South-East London. The 1878 edition of Kelly's Post Office Directory of Surrey, lists Jesse Holloway as a "Photographer" at 4 London Road, Croydon and as a "Photographic Artist" at No. 1 Versailles Terrace, Anerley Road, Anerley, Upper Norwood.

In 1876, Jesse Holloway and his wife Caroline were living in Fulham, where Jesse's first son, Harry Holloway was born towards the end of the year. Over the next 5 years, Jesse's wife, Caroline, gave birth to two more children - Kate Holloway (born 1878, Penge, Surrey) and Wilfrid (Wilfred) Payne Holloway (born 1881, Penge, Surrey). Holloway's two youngest children were born in Penge, a suburb of London about 7 miles south-east of Charing Cross. In the 19th century, the unoccupied area of Penge Common was developed into a residential district which came to be known as "Anerley", a name derived from a Scottish word for "solitary". Originally part of Upper Norwood, the area around Penge's Anerley Road became known as the London suburb of Anerley.

When the census was taken on 3rd April 1881, Jesse Holloway and his family were living in Anerley Road, Penge, at living quarters attached to his studio in Anerley in South East London:
