Donovan Cabinets

[ABOVE] Group Portrait of a Family (c1882). Cabinet Portrait by Donovan & Co , 1 St James's Street, Brighton. The introduction of the Dry Plate and Instantaneous Photography, around 1880, meant that group portraits featuring young children were more successfully executed.

[LEFT] Portrait of a seated woman (c1888). Cabinet Portrait by Thomas Donovan, 1 St James's Street, Brighton. By this date the studio was no longer described as "Donovan & Co". Thomas Donovan's sons were now old enough to assist their father in his studio and so the firm was operated as a family business.
